Around the new year, BE The Travel was featured on Tennessee + Kentucky Wedding Photographer, Allison Thompson of ALLYOGRAPHY’s page as a honeymoon specialist. We partnered with ALLYOGRAPHY to showcase what it is, exactly, you need to consider when planning your honeymoon — and Ally provided all of these great photographs in return! So if you’re recently engaged and you’re thinking, “Now What?” you just might want to keep reading: You’re Engaged! Now What? The Honeymoon Edition.

That sparkly diamond ring is finally right where it belongs - on your left hand, that is! Congratulations! You’re engaged! Suddenly an entire season of life lies ahead of you filled with showers, photographs, parties, celebrations, and planning.

Ah, yes. Planning.

As overwhelming as planning a wedding can be, there is one aspect of it that doesn’t have to be: The Honeymoon.

So keep on reading, because we’re dishing out our top 5 simple tips to help make planning your honeymoon the breeziest part in all of wedding planning. You can thank us later!

ONE: SET YOUR TRAVEL DATES.

This, of course, will come after securing your wedding date. After you have that set, you’ll want to consider whether or not you want a buffer day (or two!) between wedding and departure date, or if you just want to head on out the morning immediately following your “I Do’s!”

After you’ve decided on a departure date, consider your vacation days with work to help decide how many nights you want to spend honeymooning.

TWO: ESTABLISH A BUDGET.

It’s important to be up front in the beginning with how much you want to spend on your honeymoon. We all know how expensive the wedding planning process you’re about to begin can be!

The magic number usually lies somewhere between the fact that it’s not necessary to accumulate a gigantic mound of credit card debt for the big trip, and you also want to splurge on yourself a little bit. You only honeymoon once!

Also, always be clear on who is paying for your honeymoon. Are the travel finances all up to you and your significant other? Or is a parent or grandparent going to help in the honeymoon payment department?

You might consider setting up a honeyfund account. This way, instead of gifts at any showers you have in the future, people can add cash to your honeyfund account to help pay for your dream getaway!

THREE: GET PASSPORT READY.

If you’re planning to leave the country, you’ll need updated passports ready to go. Always remember to have at least 6 months between the day you’ll return from your honeymoon and the day your passport is set to expire. Most countries will require this, and the last thing you want is a complication upon leaving the country as newlyweds.

Also, ladies, if you’re confused about the legal name change before travel, you’re not alone. Don’t let this worry you as far as passports go! When you leave the country, all that matters is what your passport says, and that your passport name matches your airline ticket.

Fun Fact: Even after you’ve legally changed your name and have been married for years and years, you can still leave the country using your maiden name (assuming your passport isn’t set to expire, of course).

FOUR: DECIDE WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING FOR.

You don’t need to know specifics immediately, but dream out loud with your significant other about what you want your honeymoon to look like.

Do you want to be on the beach, with your toes in the sand and a drink in your hand? Is that beach at an all-inclusive resort, or are you somewhere totally off the beaten path with only locals around you?

Or maybe when you envision your honeymoon, you’re not even on a beach at all. Instead, are you hiking to the top of mountains to catch the prettiest views? Chasing waterfalls and all things adventure? Or maybe it’s none of the above, and you’re here in the USA, at a resort with a great pool and an even better spa? Or living your wildest dreams on a safari in Africa, or touring countries in Europe?

Decide what it is you’re looking for, and then go from there.

FIVE: CONSIDER A TRAVEL ADVISOR.

So you’ve done it all yourself already: you’ve set your tentative travel dates and budget, have your passport situation squared away, and have a good picture in your head about what your honeymoon looks like. Great! So... now what?

Did you know that using a travel advisor is quite arguably the cheapest part of any wedding budget? Advisors like myself, Bailie, at BE The Travel have a small start-up fee for booking a honeymoon, and after that, the rest is a (wedding) cake walk!
